Detailed process timelines establish deadlines for you and the candidates. So, you go back to work, and the candidates get confirmation that indeed, the opportunity is now.

Here's a sample timeline:

Vice President of Manufacturing

January 27: Contract signed and first retainer payment received. Job description and candidate specifications guidelines completed. Client promotional material received. Target list of companies developed by search professional and approved by client. Search process begins.
March 24: Research, direct recruiting and face-to-face interviewing by search professional. Profiles completed by selected candidates.
March 25: Candidate profiles and Boyle's summary reviewed by client. Three to four candidates chosen for interviews.
March 26 - 28: First round of interviews completed. Second retainer payment is due.
March 31 - April 2: Second and third round of interviews completed.
April 3 & 4: Offer extended to candidate of choice.
April 4 - 8: Offer accepted, candidate resigns from position.
April 21 - 28: New employment begins.
May 5: Post-search evaluation. Final retainer payment due.
